Don't know if I've put this in the right section and would a moderator be good enough to remove from the Atlas Dinky Toy collection Dinkyman/Ragnar enquiry regarding Police signs and place it on this post. Thanks

Ragnar, yes it is my car. It is original Police vehicle and they are original Police signs. Any questions, please ask. the car is a TV star in UK from TV series The Bill. It's call sign was Sierra1 hence my avatar.

Also picture of its sister car.

I have moved this topic to another forum  1:1 scale - Full Size Vehicles[/b]

Because it concerns the real vehicle and its accessories

Interesting Sierra1. Are you saying the vehicle was used in the Bill but was also a genuine Police vehicle? I always assumed the cars in the TV series were TV "props".

Hmm... was this the area car that Tony Stamp used to drive?

Hi Dave. thanks for the interest. Yes, both Sierras are genuine ex-Police vehicles, as are all of the Police vehicles in my collection. We have no mock-ups. Before my time at The Bill, they were using Rover SD-1s which had been in service with the Met for a while and these were also genuine ex-Police cars (film companies like to buy ex cars from auction as they still have the auxiliary wiring in - alternators etc, because when you're on take 37 the blue lights will kill the battery. The SD-1s stayed with The Bill long after the Met finished with them, then the Met joined the Bill in an advisory capacity and we were getting equipment before the officers on the beat, ie quick cuffs etc. The producers thought we'd better update the car fleet, so we were able to get Sierras from auction. one way you can tell that they are ex job is that Fords only ever produced a Sierra without a sunroof for the Police or their motorsport division. When the Sierras finished at The Bill and Vectras and Astras came in, these hadn't yet come to auction, so yes, you're right, these were product placement from Vauxhall, civilian cars just dressed. As we were current with the Met, that's how they stayed until the demise of the show.

In Graham Coles autobiography, Sierra1 is classed as his pride and joy. Not me, the car, LOL.

Nice story!

Are you allowed to driving the car fitted with all the blue lights and striping etc. on the streets?

If you went on the road with the car looking like that they would throw the book at you. You have to cover the blue light. We have ex Met covers that say VEHICLE NOT IN SERVICE. the door crest and the Police signs are covered with the magnetic signs that on our fridge. You're allowed the striping, as recovery vehicles, windscreen fitters are all striped. radio equipment never did work, it was all dubbed on. Same with the sirens. Now this has all been corrected and all works, but has to be disconnected when on the road. You are guaranteed to get a tug every time you go out, but thankfully 9 out of 10 times, its by a very interested copper who then wants to escort you to your destination. You do get the odd pain in the bum but everything is legal.

Thanks a lot for your reply Sierra1, this is fascinating. So it's just as you said, your cars are "celebrities" on two levels, genuine Police museum pieces, and TV stars to boot. No wonder they're your pride and joy!

I didn't know Graham had written a book, I must try and get a copy. His was always one of my favourite characters in The Bill. For that matter, the show IMO was the best Police series ever produced for TV, and I was a dedicated viewer throughout it's long run. It was so like the real thing, in many ways.

Are all your vehicles ex-Met, or do you have some examples from other parts of the UK?

It's interesting that the PTB in the Met finally realised that the "blues and twos" take a lot out of the battery. Back in the '60s (at least in my part of the world, Birmingham) cop cars' batteries had a tendency to die at the most inappropriate moments!
