We're delighted to announce that the very popular Oxford Diecast have agreed to host their forum on Toy Collector. Here's where you can discuss Oxford Diecasts past and present, ideas for new models you'd like to see and more. Oxford Diecast themselves will be stopping in from time to time, but please note that you can't use the forum to communicate directly with them if, for example, you've ordered a model that hasn't arrived yet or anything like that.

Hi Jim

The Brirish registration system for cars is a complete mess. Originally they just started with a letter/number combination A 1 and away they went max 3 letters and 3 numbers. (A1 is still extant costs more than most millionaires can afford) this is called the 6 figure system. When that ran out, they decided on 7 character plates, 3 letters (two of which denote the county) up to 3 numbers and a letter as the final character. starting with A that was in 1963. there were some letters allocated to Northern Ireland N, Z, can't remember if more. There were some letters not used O and I, and Q was reserved for personally imported and kit built cars. that ran out pretty quick, so the put the single letter at the front of the other 6 (but numbers first) that too expired pretty quickly. Now we come to the 'new' system ?

Personalised numbers and numbers showing you had a 'new' car as a status symbol, were becoming an industry itself so the government wanted a cut and control. So they decided to split the year into 2 for number plates, still up to 7 characters but a with a 0 denoting the first 'half' of the year (January to July) or a 5 denoting the 2nd 'half' August to December. In theory reducing the personalisation opportunities but retaining the status. So the year 2000 started with 2 lettters which denoted the county of registration 00 and 3 letters, which now included some of the previously 'non viable' letters Z e.t.c. This was fine until we got to 2010 ! So 6 was introduced as the letter for 2010 i.e. 2 letters 60 and 3 letters, next came 65 then of course 2011 was also a problem 15 was already the 2nd part of 2001, so we got 11, and I lost track of the stupidity after that.
