what is the best way to crimp the axle's

Place the end in a vice I suppose. That way you will not damage the model.

I use vise grips that I have taken the teeth off of. Just file them off so the jaws are flat and you can pinch the axle ends with ease. Just do it bit by bit as it is hard to get one crimp to do the job. It takes me at least 3 clamps to do mine most times.
