TOPIC: Corgi Golden Guinea Gift Set

Corgi Golden Guinea Gift Set 4 years, 3 months ago #1

Gold Boarder
Recently I went through my collection with a friend. When we came to the Golden Guinea Gift Set we were discussing whether my cars were untouched, because one out of three had a gold plated bottom plate, while the other two not. Meanwhile I compared to historical auction data - and they were the same as mine: Consul has gold plated bottom plate, the Bentley and the Corvair not.

Can someone imagine a reason why Corgi made those differences?

All the sets I have seen have the same, a Ford with plated base, but Grey bases on the the other Two models. I think your set is fine and original.

Had all three been sold separately, at those times?

Full sets and separately sold models out of the sets.

Now I also wonder why they only did one baseplate like that?  Production issues?  Cost?

I saw some Guinea sets being auctioned with quality looking repro boxes.

Does someone know who is the producer?

I bought a gold plated Consul Classics with only 3 paint chips, while the remaining plating looks quite reasonable.

Whats the best method to "repair" such small chips on a gold plated one without making it worse?

leave it alone would be my advice

Don't bother trying to restore the golden paint. Whatever gold you try it will never match.
I agree with Richard and leave it as it is.A photo is appreciated

I could not resist - gave it a try with a golden paint felt pen.

Looks somewhat reasonable for human eye, but not when photographed with macro and flash (to cruel).

Wil submit photo tomorrow, taken under normal sunlight.

Again the question: there are golden Guinea gift sets for auction, coming along with high quality (looking) repro boxes - who does produce them???

If the model was cheap, I would try to touch up. Not with a brush, but with a needle.

Result after touchup (2 major, one minor spot near front roof center area)

It first depends how it looked before. I suppose you could see the bare metal, which shows as black when the model itself is gold or silver. After you put the paint on, you could either leave it to dry, or rub it in with a finger. You don't loose anything, so you can experiment. When dry, try a car-cleaner, which probably wipes away the paint where it is not needed.

The window sticker on my car:
Have seen a very similar one on a Golden Guinea Corvair, currently for auction.
Makes me believe, my one must be standard.
Unfortunately even when viewing the real car, I can not recognize what the image means.

Someone has an idea???
