Hi Theo, as far as I'm aware these front hubs extensions serve as steps for the driver, in order to get into the cabin without too much trouble. Kind regards, Jan

"I think that the hub extensions on the Thornycroft prime mover are a sort of winch. A cable can be attached to the side of the extension and it winds to help the truck out of difficult situations. This is demonstrated Lino Ventura in the film "Le salaire de la peur"." Kind regards, Jan

June 2017, I am riding the last survivor of the 14a / 401 Coventry Climax fork lift truck. Unfortunately it is hiden by too many other vintage lift trucks. The photographer is Jan Werner who will probably post a similar photo of himself.</p>
