TOPIC: Tekno Mercedes-Benz 220S Code 3: Ambulance to Wagon

Tekno Mercedes-Benz 220S Code 3: Ambulance to Wagon 4 years, 6 months ago #1

In my 180 Ponton Code 3 thread, I mentioned that I was going to be doing a Code 3 to a Tekno 220S ambulance, converting it to a Binz-bodied station wagon/estate/kombi. I took the worst body and worst greenhouse from the two 220S ambulances, and stripped them.  Then I sanded and ground down the raised lights and roof vent and filled in the holes for the front light and flag.

After a couple of spit coats and some more sanding, the body and greenhouse were sprayed with gray primer.

As I planned to replace the original windows with the frosted rear with a completely clear reproduction part from Teknosamleren, I decided I wanted to scratchbuild a parcel shelf for the area behind the seat.  I cut a template out of paper and used it to cut a shelf out of a sheet of styrene.

I cut out the styrene sheet and painted a faux wood finish on it.

Then I dug out some old Evergeen .030 x .060 strip styrene to make slats. I touched them up with metallic silver Sharpie, then cut them to fit. I notched the ones in the middle to simulate a folded-down rear seat.

You all may recall that I intended to base this Code 3 on an actual car.

The real thing is a 190b, so if I was striving for greater accuracy I'd have found a 180 Ponton and bashed it with the 220S ambulance. That would have been too much like work and the Tekno 180s are very hard to come by, even harder than the 220S ambulance.
I chose to paint the seat, the baseplate, and the inside of the body and greenhouse in a satin ivory.

For the exterior color I had a difficult time finding a close match, and I didn't want to buy a custom can of DB 516 "medium red." I settled on a model railroad paint, Scalecoat N&W (Norfolk & Western Railway) Red, which isn't as close as I'd like and has a very slight metallic finish. Still the Scalecoat paint is very easy to work with and dries to a nice gloss that doesn't beg for clearcoat.

Steering wheel was painted black as on the actual car. Here are the subassemblies in place. You can see that I'd already done some of the trim picking with metallic silver Sharpie on the body.

First test fitting. Some adjustments are in order.

It looks almost too bare - like something is missing! (I am too used to all the Tekno Ambulance versions!)

Really cool idea - so glad you showed us the process!

Top notch work there Ed. Love the description and showing tools and product used. I like that. Nice to see you take your time, think about the details and then make it all work together. Even the split seat fold down rear. Thanks as I don't get to see or hold these cars. Not here in Canada.

Just refound this topic I forgot about, did you use clear coat in the end or choose not to lark6 ?

No clear coat, just polished the N&W Red.

<p>sometimes I think clear coat can be overrated , especially some metallic colours just don't seem to need it in order to look that good.</p>
