The Final Stop
The final pit stop by the winning TWR Castrol Jaguar team at the 1988 Daytona 24-Hour race.
Jaguar won the IMSA Daytona 24-Hours in 1988. In its first racing outing, the wining car depicted here won handily, but not without some drama. Early in the race an accident required the rear section be replaced and a couple hours later, fuel pump problems cost more time in the pits. Heavy rain fell during much of the race, making the track slick with water, oil and rubber. In the later stages of the race, the battle worn Jaguar took the lead from its sister car in the 19th hour; finishing one lap ahead of the BFG Porsche 962.
Jan Lammers (seen in the cockpit of the car) has just taken over for the final stint behind the wheel. Wheelmen men and refuelers work quickly to get the Jaguar back out into action, while the pensive team manager and other drivers look on. I have taken artistic license to insert my likeness (standing next to Martin Brundle without helmet), just hoping my name would be called...
It was a great win for Jaguar and the TWR team in a year which would see Jaguar once again atop the podium at Le Mans and again claim the World Sportscar Championship. However, it all began with the success here at Daytona.
Most figures are from Lyns Models (based on Denizen) and have been detailed and completed by me. The pit lane, equipment has been fabricated from various bits and pieces and configured to represent an actual pit stop from the era before fire suits and helmets were required for any crew other than refuelers over the wall. Working from photos, and memory of the Daytona track, this is my first attempt at a diorama of this nature and is an on-going work in progress.
The Final Stop
Overall a stunning diorama. Going in close the detail is all there including suitably grubby models! The result of a hard fought race! It must have taken lots of time to create and looking at the effort here. The only issues that let the presentation down is that two of the images include unwanted background features.
