Design papermodel with MetaSeq : Part 5

Categories // Thai Paperwork, Syndicated Blogs, Kits

After finish fuselage€™s work, I will continue on tail but before do anything, I want you to choose menu > Panel and select Object Panel to open an Object Panel. You will see Object Panel appear on screen. MetaSeq can work in own object like layer in another graphic program. Obiect panel can help you to split design into section like Fuselage€™s section, Wing€™s section or Tail€™s section. Object Panel has some button you need to know as New, Clone, Delete, Prop, Misc each button have meaning itself, New use to create a new object, Clone use to duplicate object into new object, Delete use to remove no need object, Prop is a property of current onject. Eye icon in front of each object is use for hide or unhide that object, key icon in front of each object use for lock or unlock object.

Open your Object Panel then double click at Obj1 (Double click at object€™s name is a fast way to go to object€™s property) and rename from Obj1 into Fuselage then close object property windows, Click at New button to create a new object, Double click at new object you create and rename to Tail. Hide Fuselage€™s object by click at eye icon in front of object name. Click at Tail€™s object to tell program that you want to work in that object.

Now you can work on tail€™s object what not effect in fuselage€™s object, He P1073 have a v-tail wing according to 3-views drawing. I begin doing a tail with Create tool. Change viewport to Left and click at Create tool, click at line button on Create face€™s windows. Begin make a line according to 3-views drawing like below.

Change viewport into Front viewport, select pull tool in left toolbar and crop all of line you create in previous state then drag line straight into right hand. Pull is a tool to create a face according to line you create.

Crop to select tip of tail you create and resize in Y Axis like below.

Change viewport into Top viewport, Adjust each point of tail€™s tip into shape like drawing use Edit panel.

Go to Front viewport, adjust tail€™s tip to its position via Edit Panel like below. Now you have finish an easy tail, save your work and take a breath.

#3 Begin modeling (Continue)

Look carefully in 3 views drawing to see how to manage 3d shape to look like 3 views drawing as we can. If you see Front view, you will see this aircraft is not round like cylinder we add into workspace. Shape of fuselage is look like oval shape. So first thing you need to do is modified youe cylinder from round shape into oval shape. You can use Edit panel to do in this case. Change viewport to Front viewport (by click at blue rectangle at topright corner of front viewport) zoom into your cylinder use your mouse wheel. Make sure that everything look comfortable to edit. Make sure that Pt and Ln button in topleft viewport is press (To tell program that you want to see point and line of mesh). As a polygon base program you need to edit point your self. You can crop a point you want by drag a rectangle over point you want. If you can not drag as recangle, make sure that Rc button in Edit Option toolbar is press (see picture).

Play with point via Edit panel and make shape of cylinder in front viewport as picture below.

Change viewport into Left viewport by click at 4 color rectangle at topright corner of viewport to go back to 4 view port€™s screen and click at red rectangle in topright corner of left viewport. Scale viewport to make it comfortable to work. You need to separate fuselage and scale to make cylinder we create like 3 views drawing. I decide to separate fuselage into 7 pieces. You can use knife tool to cut fuselage into number of pieces you want. Knife tool is a one of tool in command€™s tool bar. See picture below.

After finish using knife tool to separate fuselage, you need to adjust size of each section according to 3 views drawing. You can use Edit panel in this case. Crop point you need to work and scale it in whole axis (x,y,z). try to adjust your mesh follow through my sample below. If you don€™t have experience with Edit panel€™s work, You need to save a backup before adjust. Edit panel is a heart of MetaSeQ, you need to practice more to make you familiar with Edit panel.

Change workspace into bottom viewport (I think no need to tell you about how to change viewport). You will see that shape of fuselage is not the same with 3 views drawing. You need to adjust your mesh. Scale you mesh in only x-axis because if you scale you mesh in whole axis (x,y,z) your mesh will have a wrong shape in another views. Use my sample below and try to scale yourself.

Check your mesh in Pers view for your satified. If your mesh look no good, adjust each point you want. Below is my mesh after adjust some point to make fuselage look good€¦Save your file after you finish work with fuselage.

#3 Begin modeling

After we successful to add 3 views drawing into each viewport, we need to create a mesh according to 3 views drawing. MetaSeQ is polygon base CAD, that€™s mean we need to create all surface yourself different from Rhino what is NURBS (Non Uniform Rational Basis Spline) What surface can create by a compound of curves. We can create mesh inside MetaSeq by 2 different methods. First is use Primitive tool what can create basic shape of mesh such as cube, cone or Sphere. Another method is create mesh by add point of surface directly into workspace use Create tool. Below is picture of Primitive and Surface tool.

I will not deep in detail about both tools because JayBat explain clearly on his tutorial (http://www.zealot.com/forum/showthread.php?t=155969). We will straight into create mesh according to 3 views drawing.

Study 3 views drawing and decide to make a cylinder for a fuselage. I always use 16 faces of cylinder for fuselage. How? €¦Very simple, just click at Primitive tool, click Cylinder button and click Property button. There is a new windows appear€¦Simply change a value of U€™s editbox into 16 and close this windows. Program will remember that you want to create 16 face cylinder. You need to click at create button to add cylinder into workspace.

After create a cylinder, you need to rotate 90 degree in X-Axis follow through 3 views drawing to be a fuselage. There are 2 ways to rotate mesh, by Rotate (Rot) tool and by Edit Panel. If you use Rotate tool, you need to select mesh you want to rotate and click at Rot button in Toolbar. Cick at X-axis and input number of degree then click OK, Mesh will rotate follow through axis and degee you input.

After rotate cylinder 90 degree in X-Axis, Click at Img button to show your drawing what we place before. Adjust cylinder to fit into 3 views drawing. Use Edit panel to scale, move. Edit panel is a set of command buttons. Command buttons are in 3 groups Move, Scale and Rotate. Each group devide into each axis X, Y, Z. Simply click and drag in each button to activate each function. Such as if you want to scale object, just click at object you want to scale and drag Scale button into left or right side to increase or decrease scale.

As you see in above picture that 3 views drawing is not in its place yet. You can move 3 views drawing by use BkImg tool. You need to click at BkImg at toolbar and drag a 3 views drawing into location you want as below.

And below is result after use Edit Panel to scale and move cylinder according to 3 views drawing.

#2 Beginning with MetaSeQ

I know there are MetaSeQ€™s tutorial online but not much. I found some tutorial what very helpful and explain a basic to intermediated level of MetaSeQ such as JayBet€™s tutorial on Cardmodels.net€™s forum (http://www.zealot.com/forum/showthread.php?t=155969) , €œHOW TO MetasequoiaLE€ by Nishiya (http://kimagure-hikoki.hp.infoseek.co.jp/index_e.html). Also have some book about MetaSeQ (but in japanese) available at Japanese€™s Amazon shop such as €œMetasequoia+Max REAL MODELLING BOOK€ (http://www.amazon.co.jp/exec/obidos/ASIN/4861004381/miznolab-22). I used to write a MetaSeQ€™s tutorial before, about €œHow to create Northrop F-89 Scorpion from MetaSeq€ and post at Cardmodels.net€™s forum long time ago. So my current tutorial will explain like a workshop. Decide a subject€¦explain step by step about how to do€¦create mesh€¦unfold€¦assemble (if you need) and discuss about the best and fast way to create mesh.

For first workshop, I decide to do a Lufts46 aircraft, Heinkel He-1073/8 German WWII high altitude recon aircraft. Do a research by google and get some 3-views drawing from UniCraft€™s model (http://www.geocities.com/unicraftmodels/germ/he1073/he1073.htm) like below

Model was not have detail much make it easy to model. Prepare yourself by download MetaSeQ from http://metaseq.net I use register version 2.4.8 but you can use shareware version without register too. Next is download 3 views drawing from Unicraft€™s website (http://www.geocities.com/unicraftmodels/germ/he1073/he1073.htm). If someone have more reference of this aircraft, better to keep for your reference in your project. Create folder to keep all of you need in your project. Put all of you have inside (Mine is only 3 views drawing).

Everything ready? Now open your MetaSeQ. First thing you need to do is place a 3 views drawing into your work space. When you open MetaSeQ, program will show a perspective view, you can switch to another views by click at Change view button (see picture below)

Each viewport have a several buttons in topleft corner of view, Name of view (Top, Front, Left, Pers) and Option to show element in each viewport (Pt:Show Point, Ln:Show line, Fc:Show Face, Si:Show patch and Blob simply, Fr:Show only front line, Img:Show image background) You will not see something different when you click at option€™s button to show element in each viewport because you don€™t have anything inside your workspace.

How to place 3 views drawing into each viewport? Very simple just right click at Img button of each viewport, There is a new windows appear. Locate a 3 views drawing file (support file are .BMP, .PPM, .TGA, .PNG, .JPG, .TFF, .TIM) by click at Load button. Press ok button when finish your job. There will be a background image show in each viewport. If you still not see anything, make sure that Img button in press.

After you locate 3 views drawing to place as background image for each viewport. You will get screen like picture below.

After this, You need to adjust your background image a little bit. You need to move background image to its place for reference of each viewport but you will do this after you have something inside workspace.

Design papermodel with MetaSeq

Categories // Thai Paperwork, Syndicated Blogs, Kits

Just an idea to make some papermodel's design tutorial available online because I want to shared what I know, my experience what I got when I design papermodel to another people who want to know. I began design model in 2003 with a simple S-3 Viking, Use MetaSeQ and Pepakura. Both program work together very well even though I use a free version. With trial and error make my design progress better each day. Until now I want to share my experience to modeler who want to design your own model with only one reason...I don't want to keep all I know only myself. If I stop design but there are someone read my tutorial...that's mean I still there. Apologized me for a poor English. I still not good at in English, if my word or my sentence is wrong, Feel free to corrected me. I really appreciate all help from all of you.

#1 MetaSeQ and Pepakura

Before begin design, you need to know your tool what will help you to design papermodel. I prefer MetaSeQ for 3d modeling because it's free and easy to use with many function to help you to design mesh. MetaSeQ can be download at http://metaseq.net There are 2 versions available MetaSeQ and MetaSeQ LE (Light Edition), Lite Edition is free but disable some advance function. Another version is MetaSeQ Shareware version, that's mean you can use program but you need to register to get advance function such as save in different format other than .MQO or you can use plug-in what available in internet. Shareware version is only $45 (August 2008). Very cheap if compare with another 3dmodeling program.

Pepakura, another tool you need to create papermodel. Pepakura is a program what can unfold your 3D mesh into 2D flat surface to print in your printer and assemble. Pepakura is incredible program for papermodeler. I don€™t know much in Pepakura. All I know is basic function to unfold and export in to format what I can edit in graphic program. Pepakura can download free at http://www.tamasoft.co.jp/pepakura-en/ free version restrict some function but you can get full version very cheap at $38 (August 2008)

Blue Whale papercraft from Canon

Categories // Thai Paperwork, Syndicated Blogs, Kits

Canon's Creative park release new design papercraft, Blue Whale...a biggest mammal in the world. Canon's model is good for beginner modeler who want to begin with papermodel. If someone want to download and build this Blue Whale papercraft, please follow this link

The Blue Whale (Balaenoptera musculus) is a marine mammal belonging to the suborder of baleen whales (called Mysticeti). At up to 33 metres (110 ft) in length and 181 metric tonnes (200 short tons) or more in weight, it is believed to be the largest animal ever to have existed.

Long and slender, the Blue Whale's body can be various shades of bluish-grey dorsally and somewhat lighter underneath.[6] There are at least three distinct subspecies: B. m. musculus of the north Atlantic and north Pacific, B. m. intermedia, of the Southern Ocean and B. m. brevicauda (also known as the Pygmy Blue Whale) found in the Indian Ocean and South Pacific Ocean. B. m. indica, found in the Indian Ocean, may be another subspecies. As with other baleen whales, its diet consists mainly of small crustaceans known as krill, as well as small fish and sometimes squid.

Blue Whales were abundant in nearly all oceans until the beginning of the twentieth century. For over 40 years they were hunted almost to extinction by whalers until protected by the international community in 1966. A 2002 report estimated there were 5,000 to 12,000 Blue Whales worldwide located in at least five groups. More recent research into the Pygmy subspecies suggests this may be an underestimate. Before whaling the largest population was in the Antarctic, numbering approximately 239,000 (range 202,000 to 311,000). There remain only much smaller (around 2,000) concentrations in each of the North-East Pacific, Antarctic, and Indian Ocean groups. There are two more groups in the North Atlantic and at least two in the Southern Hemisphere.

Glider Fauvel AV 36

Categories // Thai Paperwork, Syndicated Blogs, Kits

Come across polish's forum and found this free model, The glider Fauvel AV36 in 1/33 scale. Very unusual shape and very interesting model, You can download this model here

Below is some information of Fauvel AV36 from Author website
The flying wing AV36 "Monobloc" was created by J. Ch.et Fauvel. Fauvel. She had the distinction of having a wing in one piece non-removable. This gave a solid and compact camera but which posed some problems during its transport trailer. For this, the spinner nose was withdrawn, and two rudders folded at a right angle against the edge of the wing outwards, it was in the 50 years the only glider at the time, manufacturing French have been sold to a number of copies abroad. She gave birth to the AV361, which was an evolution of the AV36,

Kawasaki Ki-64 Experimental Fighter "Rob"

Categories // Thai Paperwork, Syndicated Blogs, Kits

The Ki.64 was developed for the Japanese Army Air Force and was one of the most innovative Japanese designs of the war. Original conceived of in 1939, the Ki.64 had a contrarotating propellor coupled to tandem mounted engines and equipped with an evaporative cooling system.

While oriinally proposed in 1939, development didn't begin until October 1940 with the prototype being completed in December 1943. Unfortunately the prototype was damaged during testing which delayed further development. Problems also arose with the contra-rotating propeller which were never really overcome. Priorities later in the war caused the project to be shelved.

Update thread...panel line is drew and added into surface, Will add an exhaust pipe near wing root next (Forgot to add it)
