DC Universe Classics - Giganta

Categories // Action Toy Review, Syndicated Blogs, Action Figures

This will probably be my last review for 2009 so why not go out with the biggest action figure Mattel has given us in the DC Universe Classics line up so far.  The wave 8 collect and connect action figure - Giganta.

I was really looking forward to this figure.  I was a big fan of the Superfriends cartoon back in the day and I really would like to see all the Legion of Doom members get released sooner or later.  Giganta is well Gigantic.

Towering over the 6 inch Wonder Woman figure as well as wave 3's Solomon Grundy, Giganta stands at an impressive 10 inches tall.

Giganta is not really complex as far as her costume goes but because she is so big, it allows for the little details to come out more.

The paint job is great, especially in the hair.  Different shades and a darker wash highlight her hairstyle really well.  The face is also perfect.  A great determined expression and also quite beautiful.  There are no paint issues what so ever on this figure.

Giganta sort of comes with an accessory but really, this is a Gentleman Ghost accessory and that is the very tiny action figure of The Atom.

Giganta's articulation is pretty good but actually not as articulate as some of the smaller female action figures.  For starters, the head can move but is limited due to the hair sculpt.  Not a big deal.  We've seen this issue with most female figures with the exception of maybe Harley and Catwoman.  But joints missing in action on Giganta are the abdominal joint and the waist joint.  Instead we have gotten a swivel joint at the chest.  Also a little different are the hip joints.  They are ball joints instead of the usual multi-moving hip joints we've see on most DCUC action figures.  Not sure if this has anything to do with the fact that my Giganta's legs are fairly loose and i find it difficult sometimes to get her to stand.

Overall, Giganta is a GREAT Collect and Connect action figure.  She is huge, beautiful and a great Wonder Woman villain/LOD member to fill out your collection.

Sculpt/Design - 10, Paint - 10, Accessories - 5, Articulation - 7, Fun - 9

Since Giganta is a CnC action figure, you technically have to buy the entire set DCUC wave 8 set to put her together.  You can however sometimes find someone selling her on eBay without the other action figures.  So follow the links below if you're looking to get you're very own DCUC Giganta action figure.

DC Universe Classics - 2009 Year In Review

Categories // Action Toy Review, Syndicated Blogs, Action Figures

The second full year into Mattel's DC Universe Classics and we've seen some pretty cool action figures through out the year.   So I'll just go over some of the main characters and my favs we've seen released through out the 2009 calendar year.

For starter, Mattel gave us the biggest Collect and Connect action figure thus far in Wave 8's Giganta standing at about 10 inches tall.  Easily one of the best looking CnC figures aswell to date.

We've also seen the dreded return of the Walmart Exclusive set, much like Wave 5 in 2008, wave 10 in 2009 was another walmart exclusive set.  This set featured a very import action figure of The Joker which would be important to any DC Comics fan.  Joker was arguably one of the best DCUC action figures of the year in my opinion.  We also saw and a repainted Batman figure was released again in this set.  That would make this the 4th repaint using this same sculpt.  Mattel thankfully included some cool new accessories with Bats.

Power Girl, also part of wave 10 and Superman from the Gotham City 5 pack (another wal-mart exclusive).  The unfortunate thing about these walmart exclusives is that so many people have a hard time finding them.  It appears that Mattel or Walmart is only releasing this in certain areas around the US.  If you're in Canada (like me) or somewhere else, you can forget about it.  Ebay is your only option.

Captain Cold and Flash from wave 7 were some of the A list characters released in 2009.  I like how Mattel has been releasing a big name hero with one of their popular arch enemies with each set.

We also saw some New Genesis/Apokolips characters introduced such as Big Barda from wave 7, Mister Miracle from wave 6, Kalibak also from wave 6, Mantis from wave 9 and Parademon from wave 8.  Look out for more of these characters including a new Darkseid in 2010's wave 12 set.

Below we have Hawkman from wave 6 and Gentleman Ghost from wave 8.  There were some complaints about low numbers of wave 8 and 9 being released.  I myself still have not been able to finish either set.  Gentleman Ghost was very hard to find at a reasonable price.

Below we have some of the DCUC wave 9 action figures.  Left to right is Black Canary, Green Arrow, Deadshot and Mantis.

As mentioned above, Batman fans saw a few repaints of the wave 1 Detective Batman sculpt and also got some new additions for their rogue collection.  In the pic below we have from let to right, Two-Face (DCSH repaint), Catwoman (DCSH repaint), Killer Moth from wave 6, Batman (Gotham City), Deadshot and The Joker.  Is it just me or is there a lot of purple here?

There were a few two-packs released this year.  Below we see the Clash of the Cosmos Superman and Brainiac pack.

And of course, a classic Lex Luthor which also came in the Gotham City 5 Pack.  This was the only original sculpt in the set and I'm sure a lot of people bought the set just for this figure.  Fans of the old Superfriends cartoon were surely happy with this release.

Well, thats Mattel's DC Universe Classics 2009 wrap up for you.  2010 looks to have some interesting new releases.  Waves 11, 12 and 13 have been announced and I've also got my own person list of characters I hope to see wave 14 and 15 or any new two packs.  To check out some previews of waves 11, 12 and 13, click on the links below.

DC Universe Classics - Gentleman Ghost

Categories // Action Toy Review, Syndicated Blogs, Action Figures

Seems that i've fell behind on my DC Universe Classics reviews.  With wave 11 now out and some wave 12 figure showing up on eBay, I guess its time I start catching up on my reviews of wave 8 to 10 reviews.  So today's review will be Gentleman Ghost from wave 8.  First, if you missed my DC Universe Classics 2009 Year in Review post, be sure to check it out.

I had a hell of a time getting my hands on Gentleman Ghost (at a reasonable cost).  For the most part, Gentleman Ghosts sculpt has many similar parts as The Joker from DCUC Wave 10 with the exception of the head (or lack of), top hat and cape.

One of the cool features on Gentleman Ghost is the transparent plastic parts used to create this action figure.  Specifically the cape and the lower legs below the knees.

For the most part, as far as paint goes, Gentleman Ghost is completely white, but not totally.  Again, the white paint is merged with the transparent body parts and cape to give him cool a supernatural effect.

Gentleman Ghost comes with a good amount of accessories.  He comes with an old fashion white pistol and a white cane.   GG also comes with the head and hips of the Collect and Connect Giganta figure as well as a miniature figure of "The Atom".  (See my review on Giganta for more).

For the most part, Gentleman Ghost has most of the standard joints you would find on your typical DC Universe Classics action figure with the exception of a joint at the waist and obviously since he has no head, he is also lacking a neck joint.  All joint were in decent working order out of the box.

Overall, Gentleman Ghost is a cool action figure and a good villan to add to your DC Universe Classics action figure collection.

Sculpt/Design - 9, Paint - 8, Accessories - 8, Articulation - 8, Fun - 8.5

I had a heck of a time getting my hands on Gentleman Ghost.  It seems there was a shortage of this action figure.  Even on eBay, i find it very hard to find him but eBay is still your best bet at this point in the game.

DC Universe Classics - Parademon

Categories // Action Toy Review, Syndicated Blogs, Action Figures

Todays review will be on another DC Universe Classics action figure from Wave 8.  This time I will take a closer look at the classic variant of Parademon.

This version of Parademon is the classic version as oppose to the Red and Yellow Super Powers Variant.

Parademon's sculpt is comprised of a number of original body part and some really cool detail
A great head sculpt as usual.

As mentioned in recent reviews, Mattel is really stepping things up in the paint department.  We are seeing less and less sloppy paint jobs which each new DCUC wave that gets released.  My Parademon's paint job is very good.  There were some minor areas of green paint on the skin around his nose but nothing too noticeable.  I guess my only complaint is they used some red shading over the yellow boots for highlighting.  Mattel has used this color combo before and I've never been a big fan.  That being said, the red shading is very faint and not too obvious.

Outside of the Giganta CnC piece, Parademon comes with a couple of cool weapon accessories.  A big cool drill gun that he needs both hands to hold and the other is a yellow hand gun.

Parademon's joints are basically the same as what you would normally get on your standard DCUC action figure.  One small difference is the hip joints are ball joints which all for more movement and reduces the need for thigh joints.

Overall Parademon is a good addtion to the DC Universe Classics collection.  With more and more New Gods/Apokolips characters coming out in upcoming waves, you'll need at least one Parademon to fill your collection.  Your Superman will need someone to pound on.

Sculpt/Design - 9, Paint - 8, Accessories - 8, Articulation - 9, Fun - 9

Classic Parademon seems to be the harder one to find as oppose to the Super Powers variant.  I am a huge fan of eBay to get these action figures if you cannot find them at your local toy store.

Thats it for my DCUC Parademon review.  Be sure to check back with Action Toy Review for more news and reviews on your favorite action figure toy line.

DC Universe Classics - Deadshot

Categories // Action Toy Review, Syndicated Blogs, Action Figures

This week's DC Universe Classics review will be on one of the Wave 9 action figure, Deadshot.

Deadshot is probably one of the coolest of the B list Batman rogues and Im glad that Mattel decided to give us this action figure as the DC Direct version just didn't cut it.

Deadshot's sculpt is similar to most of the standard body parts we've seen on other DCUC action figures with some slight modifications to individualize this toy from the others.

Deadshot's weapons are included as part of the sculpt on each arm.  The paint job is very good aswell with not perfect but fairly clean paint lines.

Since Deadshots weapons are attached to his arms, Mattel saw no need to give us any additional accessories for this character (other than the standard CnC piece of Chemo).  It would have been nice if they loaded up Deadshot with weapons as they did with Deathstroke from wave three but what are you gonna do?

Articulation is standard compared to the majority of Mattel's DCUC action figures.  All the right joint in all the right places.  If it works, why mess with it?  No complaints in this department.

Overall Deadshot is a welcome addition to the DC Universe Classics collection.  Especially for Batman fans.  We can always use more Batman rogues for our collection (hint hint Mattel.  give us more - Ra's Al Ghul, Poison Ivy etc..).

Sculpt/Design - 8.5, Paint - 8.5, Accesories - 0, Articulation - 9, Fun - 7

Deadshot is part of the not so widely released DC Universe Classics Wave 9 set.  Unfortunately, a lot of people found it very hard to get their hands on figures from this set.  Always turn to your friends at eBay if you can't find these awesome action figures.  Chances are, someone has bought them all up from your local Wal-Mart and is selling them there.  Since wave 11 and 12 are the main focus of buyers right now, you'll probably get a reasonable deal on these wave 9 figures.

DC Universe Classics - Kid Flash

Categories // Action Toy Review, Syndicated Blogs, Action Figures

So I'm still stuck in wave 7 trying to get through all my reviews meanwhile, Mattel has released wave 8 and very recently, wave 9, along with a couple of 2 packs and a walmart exclusive 5 pack. So here we go with my 2nd last wave 7 review, Kid Flash.

For starters, Kid Flash comes in your standard Mattel DCUC packaging. Nothing new here folks.

Significantly shorter than you're standard DC Universe Classics action figure, Kid Flash stands at about 5.5 inches tall similar to fellow Teen Titan, Robin from wave 3.

As far as sculpt goes, Kid Flash has his wings on the sides of his boots and on his head but other than that, is fairly basic. His head sculpt is unique of course with his wavy red hair.

As far as paint job goes, the face is very clean. Kid's blue eyes are neat and there are no runs or overlapping or paint blotches of any kind.

The one paint/color issue that continues to keep coming up is on the action figures who have mainly a yellow costume. For some reason, Mattel continues to shade yellow with a red wash. So all over Kid Flash's torso and boots you will see this red shading technique. Other action figures that have this same problem include Mr. Miracle from wave 6, Robin from wave 3 and Firestorm from wave 2.

Kid Flash's articulation is pretty standard compared to other DCUC action figures. He has all the typical joints starting with his neck, shoulders, biceps, elbows, wrists, abdominal, waist, hips, thighs, knees and ankles. All joints move free of any obstruction and are not too loose at all.

Alas, other than the collect and connect piece of Atom Smasher, unfortunately Kid Flash comes with no additional accessories. (How will he ever help Flash defeat Gorilla Grodd???) . A bummer yes, but really, what could they give him????

If you're a Teen Titan fan or a fan of the Flash and his cast of characters, then you may want to pick this figure up. For those of you who are casual collectors of the DC Universe Classics toy line however, Kid Flash may not be your first choice.

Kid Flash: Sculpt - 8.5, Paint - 5, Articulation - 9, Accessories - 0, Fun - 8
Kid Flash is a very easy action figure to find and you could probably get him very cheap now that wave 8 and 9 are making their rounds. eBay is always best. Click here to see what auctions are available.
That concludes the reviews from Mattel's DC Universe Classic wave 7 action figures. My next review will be the Collect and Connect action figure "Atom Smasher" from wave 7 followed shortly after by action figures from wave 8 and 9. DC Universe Classics - Atom Smasher

Categories // Action Toy Review, Syndicated Blogs, Action Figures

The final review for Mattel's DC Universe Classics wave 7 is the collect and connect figure Atom Smasher. Before we get on to the review, be sure to check out the selection on eBay or Amazon. if you're looking to by purchase any of the DCUC wave 7 action figures.

Mattel has been doing a great job with the collect and connect action figures. The sculpts are nicely detailed and the paint jobs are usually very clean and Atom Smasher is no exception.

Atom Smasher stands at approximately 9 inches tall. A similar height to wave 3's Solomon Grundy and wave 5's Metallo.

A close up looks at the action figure gives us a better look at the paint job. There is a little bit of dark shading around Atom Smasher's eyes and in the chest, ribs and leg areas. Also on the arms, specifically around the veins on his arms, there is some orange highlighting.

Atom Smasher's Articulation is fairly standard. He has all the same joints as any of the other DCUC figures have. My only complaint is that I find the neck joint does not allow him to look upwards very well. Other joints include shoulders, biceps, elbows, wrists, waist, abdominal, hips, thighs, knees and ankles. All joints work well and are not too tight or loose.

Don't expect any extras with Atom Smasher. He's a hands on kinda guy, so no weapons are necessary.

Overall, Atom Smasher is as good as any other DCUC collect and connect action figure but may not really appeal to those who are just looking for the main or popular DC Universe Characters. Those who collect wave after wave religiously or DC fanboys will appreciate Mattel going deep into the DC Universe library to bring us a large variety of characters.

Sculpt/Design - 9, Paint - 9.5, Articulation - 9, Accessories - 0, Fun - 7
That concludes my look at Mattel's DC Universe Classics wave 7 set of action figures. Now that wave 8 is out and there are a few people lucky enough to even have started collecting wave 9, all the wave 7 action figures should be easily available and cheap.

DC Universe Classics - Gotham City 5 pack PREVIEW

Categories // Action Toy Review, Syndicated Blogs, Action Figures

If you're into variants of previously released action figures than this is the set for you. Mattel has released Wal-Mart exclusive Gotham City 5 pack which mostly consists of previously released DC Universe action figures with different paint jobs. Lets take a closer look.

The "Gotham City 5" includes Catwoman, Two-Face, Batman, Superman and a brand new sculpt of Lex Luthor. But how different are some of these action figures from previous versions you may already own. Lets start with Superman.

The most similar DCUC Superman action figure to the Gotham 5 version would probably be the Superman from the Braniac/Superman 2 Pack released in the Spring of 2009 (2nd stock photo from the set). The only difference between the two toys is the 2 pack version has red "heat ray" vision eyes. The Gotham 5 Superman (first one above) is your standard classic Superman. Personally, I like the figure. Mattel did release a long hair version of Superman in DCUC wave 6 but not a classic looking one like this since the DC Superheroes toy line was around. Be sure to check out my DCSH Superman review for more details. Look for this Gotham City 5 version of Superman to be sold individually when Mattel releases their DCUC wave 11 (Kilowog) set in late 2009/early 2010.

Next up is Batman. The first photo above is the Gotham City 5 version and the 2nd, from my own personal collection is a photo of DCUC wave 1's Classic Detective Batman. The sculpts are exactly the same. The only difference is the blue and grey suit vs the Gotham City 5's black and grey suit. Also, this is the same Batman sculpt we saw with the DCUC 2 pack of Batman and Clayface, except, this time, Batman is not covered in clay. Oh ya, if you're looking for new accessories with the GC5 Batman, forget it. You get zip in this pack . Again, Mattel appears to be selling this figure individually with the DCUC wave 11 set as there are a few sites on the internet that are taking pre-orders for it. Is this figure worth the purchase. Perhaps. Depends on the collector. You may already have a Batman in Black in Grey from the DC Superheroes wave 8 set. But this is a new sculpt. Decisions, decisions....

Above is the Gotham City 5 version of Catwoman in her purple outfit. The 2nd photo is Catwoman from the DC Superheroes wave 8 set. The only difference between the two figures is one, the purple vs black outfits. And two, the accessories. The original DCSH version came with a whip, a backpack, a pearl necklace and a cat statue. The GC5 version of Catwoman is the only one of the 5 action figures in this set to come with an accessory, however, she only comes with a whip and that is it. If you check my review of the DCSH Catwoman figure, you'll see I wasn't too big of a fan of this toy compared to the others from the set. Its very thin and flimsy. She could not hold the whip very securely, the paint job on the face was sub par and her goggles are not removeable. The DCSH version was very hard to find back in 2007 so if you were not lucky enough to get your hands on her, you are probably interested in grabbing the GC5 version. Just be aware that the figure is really nothing special.

Above you will see the Gotham City 5 version of Two-Face in purple and orange, and the 2nd photo, again from my personal collection, is a picture of the DC Superheroes version of Two-Face. Other than the colors between the two figures, the one main difference I can see is that Two-Face's left hand has changed. Possibly to make it easier to hold a gun....but wait GC5 Two-Face doesn't come with any accessories, so whats the point?? Oh well. I did have a few issues with the original Two-Face action figure. One, its was hard as HELL to find. Two, the paint job was mediocore at best and had a lot of botches. Click the link above for my review. Other than the face, it was not an original sculpt. (Body was taken from a previous DCSH Clark Kent release). For me though, I am interested in getting this version of Two-Face. I quite like the more colorful look with the green face. Its a little more....comic booky.....if thats even a correct term, than the previous version.

On to the final figure of the DCUC Gotham City 5 set and that is the only original sculpt (sort of) of Lex Luthor. I say "sort of" because, yes there are a lot of standard looking parts used for this figure but compared to the DC Superheroes version of Battlesuit Lex Luthor, it is a huge difference. The head is a completely new sculpt giving it a very classic look of Luthor. Again, the crappy thing is GC5 Lex does not come with any accessories, were as Battlesuit Lex came with a very cool ray gun and a piece of Kryptonyte which fit in either Lex's hand or the actual gun. Despite the lack of accessories, personally this is the Lex Luthor figure I've been waiting for Mattel to release.

So, is this set worth the purchase? Depends. Do you like the characters. Do you like repainted variants. Is the new Lex Luthor figure worth it? Personally, I like the repaints....Catwoman I can do without but the Two-Face, Superman and Batman would be cool to have. Lex is a must for my collection though. If you're not lucky enough to find this set at your local Wal-Mart, there are tons of auctions on eBay right now for these figures individually (loose) or for the full pack. Expect to pay between 20-35 bucks for Luthor and 10-15 for the other 4 if you decide to by them loose. For the full set, you're looking at 60-90 dollars (plus shipping costs of course).

DC Universe Classics - Vigilante

Categories // Action Toy Review, Syndicated Blogs, Action Figures

I am starting to fall way behind on my DC Universe Classics reviews. This is partially due to the fact that it is hard as hell for me to find these figures. I'm also finding that the prices seem to be going up these days on eBay. Especially for the more popular characters. With Wave 9 and 10 starting to make an appearance in stores and online, I figure, its time to finally get started on my Wave 8 reviews so here we go. This review will be on Vigilante:

For starters, the packaging has not changed at all over 8 waves. Same style graphics etc. Its been two years now since this toy line began so, it has that been there, done that feeling. Personally, it doesn't matter to me, I do not keep my toys in their packaging.

Vigilante is one of those figures that pretty much consists of the standard DC Universe Classics body parts. The head sculpt is of course, original and does justice to the comic book character.

Similar to Captain Cold from DCUC wave 7, Vigilante supports a belt with a gun holster on his left side. The rest of the body, you've pretty much seen before on other figures with some minor differences which is not a bad thing IF the paint job is done right.

The paint job is nothing fancy but it works. Vigilante is mostly black with white and blue areas. The paint is clean and does not really run across any of the lines. There is not much to complain about really. His red visor is transparent but I cannot make out any eyes inside them.

If you've been collecting these DCUC action figures, then you'll know that Mattel has been generous with the articulation and because Vigilante's body is basically made up of standard parts, his articulation is not different then the vast majority of the previous DCUC figures. All joints moved fairly well and were not too loose at all.

One of the things that really makes me like this action figure is the cool accessories that come along with it. Vigilante is armed to the tooth with an revolver which can be placed in his hand or his side holster, an automatic pistol and an automatic rifle which also has a strap and can be worn around his shoulders, on his back. All accessories fit fairly well in his hands.

Vigilante has a lot of guns but i think Deathstroke from DCUC wave 3 out arms him. One more note, Vigilante also comes with, of course, a connect and collect piece which is the left leg of Giganta.

Despite Vigilante's standard looking sculpt, I really took a liking to this action figure. Probably because I like the colors of his uniform and he comes with a sh*tload of guns. The extra accessories really increases the fun factor in my opinion and even though he is probably not an A list character, this action figure is still worth the purchase.

Sculpt - 7, Paint - 9, Articulation - 9, Accessories - 9, Fun - 8.5

Vigilante should not be too hard to find. If you read my blog regularly then you'll know that I like to use eBay to purchase these action figures, simply because Mattel does not distribute these toys in my area for some unknown reason. But there are deals on eBay so its not all that bad.

To find Mattel's DC Universe Classics Vigilante on eBay, click here
Amazon.com also has a decent selection of DCUC toys, click here.
Expect to see many more DCUC reviews in the coming weeks as I try to catch up. There are still wave 8 and 9 figures i do not have yet, plus there are 2 packs, the gotham 5 pack and I'm starting to see a few Wave 10 figures appear here and there on eBay. The question is, how easy will it be for me to get my hands on them all and will my pocket book be able to hand it?? So be sure to make your way back to Action Toy Review for more info, news, previews and reviews on Mattel's DC Universe Classics action figures.

DC Universe Classics - Superman vs Brainiac: Clash in the Cosmos

Categories // Action Toy Review, Syndicated Blogs, Action Figures

Some of the 2-Packs Mattel released recently either have not really appealed to me or include figures which I already have (example: Clayface) but the Clash in the Cosmos 2 pack featuring an early version of Brainiac caught my attention right away. So I bought it and will give my impressions:

Packaging for the 2 packs have similar graphics, colors as you would see on the average DCUC action figure package, just slightly bigger. On the back you do have a little blurp about each character's origin which is always a cool feature. First, we'll take a look at Brainiac.

This figure is the main reason why i bought this particular 2 pack. When i was a kid, i really enjoyed the Challenge of the Superfriends tv program and this version of Brainiac a similar likeness to the TV counterpart. Lets take a closer look at the sculpt and design of this action figure:

Brainiac's torso, arms and legs are basically standard parts used in multiple DCUC action figures. The head is an original sculpt of course and the addition of the shirt collar gives the Brainiac sculpt a bit of individuality.

As I've said before, re-using similar body parts is not a big deal as long as the paint job works. More on that later. Below is a closer look at Brainiac's head.
Brainiac's face looks great and includes some awesome detail. The collar, you'll notice is not perfect on both sides, one side is up more than the other.

Brainiac's paint job is good in the sense that there is no slop or colors crossing over lines but if you look closely at his pink shirt, the color on the arms is more of a purple compared to the color on his torso. Not the greatest job at matching colors up here.

Just to compare DCUC's Brainiac to some previous versions of the character. On the left you will see a DC Direct version of Brainiac as well as on the right, the DC Superheroes version. The good thing about the Brainiac character is that there have been so many versions of him over the years so there are multiple possibilities of action figure versions of him. As far as Articulation goes, this new version of Brainiac is very standard compared to the rest of the DCUC toyline. All the right joints in all the right places and all joints out of the package were not too loose.

Clash in the Cosmos Brainiac comes with a ray gun but the crappy thing is, this gun is a re-use part itself. Mattel had previously used this weapon with their DC Superheroes Battlesuit Lex Luthor a few years back before the DCUC toy line began. Its a cool looking gun and has a slot on the back for a piece of Kryptonite which also came with Lex Luthor, however, it is not included in the Brainiac/Superman 2 pack.

Overall, I like this version of Brainiac. The head sculpt is very good but the paint job loses points due to the different shades of pink on his shirt and that, for me, was a bit of a let down.

Sculpt/Design - 8.5, Paint - 6, Articulation - 9, Accessories - 7, Fun - 8.5

Brainiac fits in nicely with the rest of my Legion of Doom collection. Still missing Giganta, Cheetah and Toyman.

So now we move on to Superman. Now, I did not care too much about getting this Superman figure for one MAIN reason. This Superman has heat vision eyes which means his eyes are pure red.

The rest of the sculpt is total classic superman from head to toe. Why would anyone want Superman with red eyes...no idea.

Taking a look at the sculpt itself, the face looks great (except for the eyes). I believe this is the same head sculpt used for Eradicator from wave 5 just without the glasses. (I havent confirmed this yet).

The body and cape are the same as the DCUC Mullet head Superman from wave 6. So basically, this figure is a complete re-use of parts.

If you can get over the red eyes, it is actually a very good version of Superman. HOWEVER, if you can't get over the red eyes, look into getting the Superman from the DC Universe Classics Gotham City 5 pack. It is the exact same version as the Clash in the Cosmos Superman except he has normal eyes.

Some different versions of Superman brought to us by Mattel recently. In the back you see Blue and Red Superman from DCUC wave 2. On the left is a Superman figure from Mattel's previous toy line DC Superheroes. And on the right, is the Superman variant action figure from DCUC wave 6 with Superman in his Recovery Suit and has him supporting a very unpopular mullet head.

The paint job on this figure is great. No mistakes, smudges, slop or anything. Colors are match the classic version of this character. Nothing to complain about really.

Articulation is just as you would expect from the DC Universe Classics toy line. Joints include the neck, shoulders, biceps, elbows, wrists, abdominal, waist, hips, thighs, knees and ankles. All joints moved very well out of the box. One small issue is that the cape weighs Superman backwards a little bit. No accessories were included with this Superman action figure.

Sculpt/Design - 8.5, Paint - 9.5, Accessoreis - 0, Articulation - 9, Fun - 8

So who's gonna want this version of Superman? Well, Superman junkies of course. It is a very very good version of Supes, its just the red eyes take away from him if you're looking for that one classic version of him. No question that it is a good set to get but the main figure for me in this set was Brainiac. I think if you're looking for the BEST Superman figure on the Market, then take a look at the Gotham City 5 pack Supes (which i have already previewed and will be reviewing shortly)

Actual Heat Vision - Not included.
If you're looking to purchase this DC Universe Classics 2 pack, then eBay is the place to get it. Even if you're only looking for the Brainiac figure you may be able to find someone selling him on its own.

DC Universe Classics - Dr. Fate

Categories // Action Toy Review, Syndicated Blogs, Action Figures

Next up for review is DC Universe Classics wave 8's Dr. Fate. He comes in a classic and modern variant. This review will be on the modern version.

Below you'll see the packaging. Nothing new here.

As far as the sculpt goes the torso legs and arms are made up of basically standard parts. The cuffs around the cloves are a little different. The head is obviously a new sculpt but there is really not much too it. Just a big tin can over his head. No details to speak of. His right hand is also sculpted a little differently than most DCUC figures. It is an open hand which i don't think I've seen on any other figure yet.

Dr. Fate's cape is also a little differently molded the some of the other DCUC characters with capes. Its actually a bit smaller and lighter and does not weigh him back that much.

Dr. Fate standard up fairly well next to the other DCUC action figures. Basically the same height, approximately 6 and a quarter inches tall.

The paint job on Dr. Fate is simple but clean. There are no really difficult areas to get messed up. Its either blue or yellow.

Dr. Fate comes with of course the collect and connect piece of Giganta (right arm) plus a Ankh-shaped electric bolt which plugs right into the open right hand.

Dr. Fate's articulation is also very standard compared to other DCUC action figures. Joints include the neck, shoulders, biceps, elbows, wrists, abdominal, waist, hips, thighs, knees and ankles. When i took Dr. Fate out of his packaging, all joints were working properly and none were too stiff or too loose.

Overall, I really don't have any complaints about this action figure. Its a good likeness of its comic book counterpart so what more can you ask for. Paint job is clean, joints work well and you get a little accessory included.

Sculpt - 8, Paint -9, Accessories - 6, Articulation - 9, Fun - 8

DC Universe Classics - Commander Steel

Categories // Action Toy Review, Syndicated Blogs, Action Figures

Mattel's DCUC Wave 8 is getting to be yesterday's news these days thanks to release of DC Universe Classics wave 10 (which is a Wal-Mart exclusive set). So trying to finish off my Wave 8 action figures, today's review will be on Commander Steel.

Quite honestly, I have no clue what the Commander Steel story consists of so I'm not going to pretend I know anything about the character. Lets just stick with the review on a toy basis. Judging by the picture below right, this action figure is a pretty good likeness of its comic book counter part.
As you may notice, with the exception of Commander Steel's head, the rest of his body is made up of re-use body parts.
Very standard looking....

What is a little more unique about Commander Steel is his paint job. It is a nice combination of Metallic Blue with red and white and actually looks pretty cool. It is a similar blue color used on Booster Gold from wave 7.

The quality of the paint job is generally good to above average with no really mistakes or slop to talk about.

As far as accessories go, Commander Steel only comes with the upper torso portion collect and connect piece of Giganta, which, quite honesty, is the only reason I decided to get this action figure. There are no other accessories included.

Since Commander Steel is your standard, run of the mill DCUC action figure as far as body parts goes, the same goes for his articulation. Nothing really different to speak of here. Joints include neck, shoulders, biceps, elbows, wrists, abdominal, waist, hips, thighs, knees and ankles.
All joints on this action figure were in good working order out of the box.

Commander Steel is your typical run of the mill DCUC action figure. I like the paint job color combo on this action figure best. The metallic blue looks cool with the red and white but as I mentioned, the character itself does nothing for me. Really I could think of maybe 50 other characters they could've given us before this one. If you're a fan of the Commander Steel comic, you'll be happy with the purchase. If you know nothing of the character and aren't looking to finish the Giganta BAF, then you'll probably skip this one.

Sculpt - 8, Paint - 9, Accessories - 0, Articulation - 9, Fun - 7
Commander Steel is available all over eBay so if you're looking to pick him up or need to complete your Giganta BAF, then head over to eBay by clicking here.
Now that Wave 9, 10 and the Gotham 5 pack are all out, I'll probably be jumping around from set to set on my reviews instead of finishing off 8, then getting to 9 who knows when. So be sure to check back with Action Toy Review see which review will be next.

DC Universe Classics - Lex Luthor (Gotham City 5 Pack)

Categories // Action Toy Review, Syndicated Blogs, Action Figures

When I first heard about the DC Universe Classics Gotham City 5 pack which includes an exclusive Classic Lex Luthor action figure, it was easily considered a must buy for me. Ya, the other 4 figures are just re-paints but we're talking Lex Luthor here. The greatest criminal mind of all time. The other figures included in this pack are Batman, Superman, Catwoman and Two-Face. I'll get to the other figures down the road but lets get right to the main piece of this set, Lex Luthor:

First, as you can see, like many of the DCUC action figures the main parts of the torso, arms and legs are basically re-use parts. Giving this Lex figure its own individuality are, of course, the new head sculpt and some additional fine tuning here and there.

Wrapped around LL's chest is an X shaped....belt (?) with 4 canisters on the front....at least its what i think are canisters. The chest belt is a separate piece from the torso and has a leathery look to it but cannot be removed. There are also canisters placed on each side of his thighs and calves. One thing that you can really see in these pics (above) is that Lex's right arm sort of sticks out which is probably due to the tight packaging.

Lex's paint job is tight and his face is highlighted with a rosy skin tone shade over his forhead and cheak bones. The costume is fairly basic with no difficult areas to get messed up. There aren't any complex designs here. Green pants and gloves, purple shirt and boots, done.

Comparing DCUC Lex Luthor to DC Superheroes Battlesuit Lex Luthor (below), You'll notice that they really are two completely different action figures, different sculpts from head to toe.

The other major difference I thought was the lack of accessories included in the Gotham City 5 pack. Again, comparing the two action figures in the picture above, the old Battlesuit Lex Luthor came with a gun and a piece of Kryptonite. GC5 Lex Luthor comes with Zippo, nadda, nothing. He is sculpted with one closed fist and one open hand so he could've been given a weapon of some sort.

DCUC Lex Luthors articulation is standard from the DCUC toy line. If you have any of these DCUC action figure then you've got a pretty good idea of what you're getting. All joints were in proper working order out of the box.

Overall, Lex Luthor is a must have figure if you're any kind of a DC Comics or Superman fan. The problem is, Lex is not sold separately and you have to fork over 50 bucks or more to get him in a pack along with 4 other re-paints of previously released DCUC action figures. So you need to decide if this exclusive action figure is worth the cost.

Sculpt - 8, Paint - 9, Accessories - 0, Articulation - 9, Fun - 7

You have a few options on how to get your very own DCUC Lex Luthor action figure. First is you can head to your local Wal-Mart store (in the US only) and see if your store is one of the few that have the Gotham City 5 Pack in stock. The second option is to check eBay for the GC 5 pack (i paid $48 US plus shipping) and the third option, is to also check eBay but see if anyone is selling Lex Luthor by himself (loose). Its very possible but expect to pay about $30.00 for him on his own plus shipping costs.

Thus concludes another DCUC action figure review. I'll be jumping around finishing off reviews of Wave 8 and the remaining Gotham 5 Pack figures, plus starting on reviews of wave 9 and 10 (if i can get my hands on wave 10 at all) in the near future. So be sure to check back with Action Toy Review for more news, previews, info and reviews on Mattel's DC Universe Classics action figures.

DC Universe Classics - Black Canary

Categories // Action Toy Review, Syndicated Blogs, Action Figures

Jumping into Mattel's DC Universe Classics wave 9 set, my review today will be of the only female action figure of the set, Black Canary.

The packaging for the most part is standard so don't expect anything out of the ordinary here. Other than the background picture that changes each wave, there is nothing new.

Enough about the boring packaging and on to the action figure inside. Black Canary is has a couple of features that are unique. For starters, the four horseman have created a beautiful head sculpt.

Black Canary's body also has some interesting features, the main being that she's got actual fish net stockings over her legs (more pics below) which is something we've not seen on any of the other DCUC action figures yet. More on this in a moment.

The paint job looks great and really there is nothing to complain about. The paint on her face made to look like makeup is very clean. The rest of the paint job is also very solid.

Now as for articulation, there are a couple of differences between Black Canary and the other DCUC female action figures like Wonder Woman, Harley Quinn and Big Barda.

As you can see in the picture above, Black Canary lacks the Mattel trademark hip joints we seen on practically every single other DCUC figure and instead have the regular T hip joints we normally see in a lot of DC Direct action figures. Because of this, Black Canary's legs can only move forwards and backwards and really makes it hard to pose her in many cool fighting scenes. To make up for this Mattel has added a twisting joint in at her boots.

The other major bummer about the articulation is that Black Canary's neck can barely move due to the sculpt of her hair. The only position that her head can move is down and slightly to the left.
Looking for some accessories to compliment your very cool Black Canary action figure. Sorry folks, she comes with nothing other than an arm piece for the Collect and Connect Chemo action figure.

No question that Mattel's DCUC Black Canary is a great looking action figure but looking good comes with a price and that is in this case articulation. Still, its not that big of an issue that would make me want to skip out on this great looking action figure of this classic character. You should not hesitate picking this action figure up if you get the chance.

Sculpt/Design - 9, Paint - 9, Articulation - 6, Accessories - 0, Fun - 7
