Customising Matchbox Scammell and other restorations. 11 months, 3 weeks ago #1

What can my imagination create from these well loved, somewhat deliberated Matchbox Super King Scammells that have been collecting dust out in the workshop awaiting rejuvenation back into life.

A couple have broken windows that could be fixed, while some have broken plastic suspension that really cannot be replaced as yet for I know of no-one who may supply such spare parts unless they may cannibal them likewise with me.

So after having a bit of playing around in good old Microsoft Paint things are looking somewhat feasible for my imagination theroy in making a eight wheeler with big sleeper cab to boot with.

With the suspension being plastic, I was thinking that maybe you could cut them lengthwise down the centre by the rivets, and then join two intact halves using plastic- or super-glue. Also for trailers, I think there are almost endless possibilities with all Super Kings sharing the same coupling-system.

Looks like plenty of work to be done here on this inspirational 8 wheeler dreamt up by me.

Should have been a butcher, just love chopping up good stuff.

Now just how do I get all this to match up. So don't go away as the story is just about to unfold.

Testing the feel of it all.

Lots of grinding and filing away the unwanted interfering metal so as the parts will slide together.

Starting to look good.

Had  some problems with  TC running slow as hell.

Just one of those jobs take a bit off then test to see if they are going to fit.

At the moment this conversion is looking like the Chinese Six.

Good old made in china metal epoxy to fill in with.

Lots of filing and grinding until the parts just slide in a nice tight fit.

Like a bit of super glue would do although I am also using the metal epoxy to bond it all together.

Nearly getting the parts together to make the eight wheeler tractor.

Just some of the inspirational images to go by. Only one thing they never made a Schammell Crusader eight wheel like they did with the Routemaster. The other was the EKA recovery.

Happy snappy shots from the screen.

So the production line continues with some more donors lined up awaiting their fate.

I have flattened out the roof on the eight wheeler as there is a box to go ontop. Like I am going Indian with this one.

Just got to have a Chinese Six.

Nothing like taking advantage of the Autumn sun.

A Britain's field gun getting a bit of a touch up in the paint department and another project lingers alongside.

Some of that cheap two part metal epoxy made in china. works but takes a long time to really cure. Sands and files well and sets pretty hard in the end.

Getting ready to bog it together.

Sometimes I use the airbrush for touch ups repaints.

Now I have to take some more progress photos for you all.

Cheers.

Nice job on that Jim.  nothing quite like a twin cab or big sleeper box.  Having a heap of the same model makes it very easy to have some fun and create a unique vehicle. Look forward to seeing it all painted up.
