TOPIC: Dinky guy quick fix.

Dinky guy quick fix. 1 year, 2 months ago #1

Bought this a while back, it was missing the axle clips. The previous owner had cut axle clips out of a tin can and they did nothing to keep the axles firmly in place. bought these for £4 from a seller here in the Uk. It has turned good, now just need some tyres are the tyres for this the same as the ones used on the military vehicles.

The model itself was too good to repaint so will stay as is.

I use a 17mm treaded tire on the Guy trucks I have done for a customer. Nice to see you have an early version with all four axle clips. Later the rear ones were eliminated and post with holes were added to the mold.

This one had the newer cab but is basically the same model. I like the looks of treaded tires over the smooth ones.

NOT SURE IF YOU KNOW THIS, SO HERE IT GOES... APPLE CIDER VINEGAR REMOVES RUST FROM TIN EASY. DEPENDING ON AMOUNT OF RUST, SOAK FOR AN ABOUT AN HOUR AND USE A TOOTH BRUSH  WITH HARD BRISTLES. REPEAT SOAK AND BRUSH UNTIL IT IS  THEN PAINT RIGHT AFTER DRY. I USE A BASE COAT FIRST.

JEEEZ, HERE I AM TELLING THE EXPERTS. JUST LIKE A NEWBEE, HUH?

Yep we know about the vinegar trick. Don't really need it on this one as it only has minimal rust on on the tin base. Just need some new tyres for it as the ones on it now are the wrong size.

Yes Erwin, that has been discussed here before. Just to add, I use a brass wire brush or a stainless steel wire brush. I soak overnight in straight table vinegar and it works well most times. If you try to use paint stripper for furniature on the base you will not have much luck. Not sure why but it does not want to move with stripper. Drop in into the vinegar over night and it just floats off the next morning.

I then rinse it well and use the brushes to get the last of the paint or stain off and then into my toaster oven at about 150° F for about 10 minutes until it is nice and warm and dry. I then use my Brass Brush on my Bench Drill Press. Set the belt to the lowest speed and then polish the base, inside and out. Then I paint it with an Acryl Black Enamel type paint, at least 2 coats. I do not prime first. Never have on my base plates and they come out nice an shiny. Just another way of telling it is probably a restoration rather than original. Of course the rivets usually give that away too.
