Some stuff to do 7 months, 3 weeks ago #1

Made a start with some models

After a caustic soda bath

The baseplate of the Mercedes after a treat with vinegar

There was also a Matchbox Yesteryear in this little lot and finished this in white.

Here next to an original one

Hey they look interesting, look forward to seeing more. I was just about to post up a picture of my restored Mercedes L319 Dinky bus too! Is that Mustang a Gamda/Sabra/Cragstan? They seem to be one of the few Diecast makers who made the "notchback" Mustang.

Good work Aad,
I see you use the same method as me for removing the paint. Just bought a few kilos of caustic soda granulate in Germany last week

What Sort of container would you put die cast items into for the bath?

I have been previously using paint stripper and when that did not work sanding down my models however  I have now bought some Caustic Soda granulate after reading this topic from the local hardware store with the intention of giving the cars a  good ol bath lol

Hi

Please be very careful if you are going to use Caustic Soda, it's dangerous stuff.

Use a plastic container (Caustic doesn't affect it, but it does generate it's own heat (exothermic), so ensure the container won't melt/buckle. If it's the first time using it, I suggest doing it outside too, just to be on the safe side. ALWAYS add the Caustic to the COLD water, little by little, it can explode if you add the water to the Caustic. Use rubber gloves.

You will need to wear rubber gloves & use safety specs as the reaction when added to the boiling water causes splashing.

Cover to just over the roof of the model  with boiling water then add the soda , important do not breathe in the fumes from this reaction.

Take care.

Wash the model off when finished with cold water then dry it.
