Here's where you can discuss all general diecast stuff - mystery items, ask who made a model of a particular car, ask for info about an obscure manufacturer or chat about anything else related to vehicles smaller than 1:1 scale!

Rollerman,
Were these also produced in 1964?

Austin Healey 3000 (MkII & III), 1961-67 9 years, 5 months ago #32

Platinum Boarder
Often referred to as the "big Healey", the 3000 was a powerful sports car and is still popular for vintage racing to this day.

The MkII, launched in march 1961, at first inherited the grille and windscreen from the MkI, but the june 1962 design update BT7 MkII introduced the characteristic grille with vertical bars, as well as a wraparound windscreen. MkIII (october 1963) looked almost 100% identical to the predecessor, but had an even more powerful engine, as well as added luxury equipment. In mid 1965 the model got seperate front indicators.

Because MkII (post june '62) and III are so alike, both have been included here.

Please note that Vanguards have a whole bunch of models labeled as either "Austin Healey 3000 MkII" or "Austin Healey E 3000 MkII" (e.g. #VA 05101) - they do, however, all have the MkI grille and the MkI windscreen, in other words, they're early MkII and look different from the 1964 version, so have been omitted from this list.

Danbury Mint (post-june 1965, pewter), 1/87 (modern pewter)

Going through the models out there, I've realized what a jungle it is. Several models are named incorrectly. The only safe thing to say is, that for a 1964 model, you should get one with vertical grille bars and wraparound windscreen, front turn indicators should be one on each side, if there's two, it's post 1965. Good luck!

yet another autocrop in the previous post, so here's a recap:

Yes, Rollerman is right... the big BMCs don't end with the Westminster - it was possible to go even higher! The original Princess was launched in 1947 as Austin A120 Princess I, it was followed by Austin A135 Princess II in 1950, and Austin A135 Princess III in 1953 - the three of them looked practically 100% identical. In 1956 a brand new body was ready and BMC decided to drop the 'Austin' from the name and turn Princess into a marque, so the new car was named Princess IV. Long wheelbase versions were introduced in 1952 as DS6 (saloon) and DM4 (limousine).

Costs and prices were continuallty on the rise, and by the late 50's they'd reached a level where there was almost no market left. As a consequence, it was decided to drop the short wheelbase version and leave only the lwb, thus in 1960 full production responsibilties were taken over by Vanden Plas, so the car now became Vanden Plas Princess 4 Litre. For a model, you'll probably find the MiniMarque 43 version the best choice, but Oxford's range offers some interesting alternatives - the castings are different, some longer than others, but you may find that some of the "late" castings suit your needs.

Vanden Plas Princess 4-Litre R (1964-68) 9 years, 5 months ago #36

Platinum Boarder
I will only just touch upon the other car mentioned by Rollerman, the Vanden Plas Princess 4-Litre R, as it wasn't announced until the fall of 1964, so strictly speaking it wasn't among the buyers' choices for 1964.

The car doesn't look anywhere near the other Princess 4-Litre with its very updated bodywork, derived from the Austin A110 Westminster. The 4-Litre R had the very unusual feature of a Rolls-Royce engine and slightly less than 7000 were produced between 1964 and 1968.

Unfortunately, if you want a model of this car, you seem to be out of luck, as I have been unable to find a single one. Rollerman may be able to help with definitive answers on this,

This tiny microcar was actually a Fiat 500 with a different body. Throughout its lifetime, technical improvements mirrored those on the Fiat. Several different bodystyles were available. Here's the Berlina (saloon)

Thanks Teebodk, there is certainly a lack of models based on the Vanden Plas 4Ltr 'R'. One that comes to mind is the 'TAT/TELSALDA'.

As a 'TAT' model (TAT is on the baseplate), it is model number 730.

As a 'TELSALDA' model with a Boat on trailer, it is number 25021 in a very long 'TELSALDA' box!

Excellent, this is exactly what I was hoping for with this thread: that members with expert/niche-knowledge on one or more cars mentioned, would share it here, so that later on the thread can be used for searches/answers if somebody wants to find a model from this year.

Oh, and I forgot to ask if you also have something to add about the other Vanden Plas. I found this car to be very confusing, to say the least: "Austin", "Princess", "Vanden Plas", DM4, DS6, SWB, LWB, MkI, II, III, IV, 4-Litre. Model makers seem to just grab a few of the descriptions and use on their boxes/material... MiniMarque 43, for example, simply claim their model to be a "LWB" from the years "1952-68". Oxford use the terms "early", "mid" or "late", "Vanden Plas" is rarely, if ever, used by anyone and so on.

I have a feeling I've overlooked some models that should have been on this list, but in the end I gave up, can you help?

Of course, the main focus is on the cars available in this thread's focus year, 1964, and I'm not even sure any models fit that description (including the ones I listed)

One other Vanden Plas Princess 'R' model in White metal from 'MILESTONE MINATURES' in 1/43rd scale on number GC66G, and Three cars on the ADO 16 body are the plastic 'TELSALDA' friction powered model from Hong Kong, a polythene based plastic kit by 'FROG' and a White metal model by 'CROSSWAY MODELS' naturally in 1/43rd scale.

Sorry, I don't have pictures of the Milestone and Crossway models on this computer.

Autobianchi Bianchina Trasformabile (Coupe), 1957-? 9 years, 4 months ago #42

Platinum Boarder
The coupe version of the Bianchina is even smaller than the Berlina. The official name was Trasformabile (Convertible)... it had fixed a-, b-, c-pillars and roof frame front + sides, but a fabric roof and loose rear window. I don't know for how long this version was made - one list says it ended in 1962, but the car is still in my 1964 annual and I have also seen some talk about updates made in 1965, so...

There are quite a few models to choose between, and while most of them are quite accurate, some (like Scottoy) seem to have missed the main characteristic of this Trasformabile, the special folding roof.

Models include:

Fabbri (Auto Vintage Deluxe Collection) #3, (red/white), 1/24 (modern diecast partwork)

Fabbri (Quattroruote Series) #12, (white/red), 1/24 (modern diecast partwork)

The 1964 car annual only lists the standard S3 Saloon, but there were a couple of other versions available. I'll mention all versions below, just in case, and I'm sure Rollerman has lots of extra information about them. Remember when doing searches, that some write the name as S3, others use SIII/Siii instead, so make sure you try both.

Neo did a great job in my opinion, I saw a few cars in Houten and they were very, very good
