Here's where you can discuss all general diecast stuff - mystery items, ask who made a model of a particular car, ask for info about an obscure manufacturer or chat about anything else related to vehicles smaller than 1:1 scale!

CUL8R only one I use on phone I try to send texts in clear english, not all abbreviations are recognisable.

What does that mean ? I get from my neice occasionally she is 24 , I am 73, funnily enough I can often work them out, must have been years of using slidex codes in the army in 50's

Good one Chris. Are you entering the post at the top of the page every time you post or come in from a link? I came in from my email link and arrived at the top of the page. Now I will post this and it will go to the bottom of the page but I go to the top of the page and have to scroll down to see my post.

Is this happening to you too?

Re: OT = Off-Topic 1 year, 1 month ago #5

I have always had to do this write at top post at top scroll down

I have noticed that before when i clicked on a link from an e-mail it took me to the post but it does not do that now however one improvement is that for the first time I can now post with IE9 before i had to bring up GOOGLE then sign in then find post again to reply

Intriguing this time when i did an edit it went back to my post but maybe that is because i edited it.

This will only become a niggle if there are a number of pages and you have to scroll down to the end again

When I put the above edit in I had to scroll down again so it works as it pleases I think

Last time I had to scroll down H'sIA what ever

wonder why every incarnation the site looks worse than before???

Can't find 'latest posts' at all.

Still hasn't got the html codes option available which will be a lot easier if something goes wrong with the script.

And am still having problems with the LI as it kicks me out.

But getting back to the subject at hand.

I left a lot out as they are CC codes that will create Smileys when you show them like the colon and right bracket.

I remember reading that txt is the modern shorthand.

Not everyone can do shorthand and  most shorthand is very personal.

Problem with some texting is that ppl will spell phonetically. The ones that have problems with spelling in general, normal or texting are dyslexic.

Age has nothing to do with it.

In my work we use a lot of 10-codes.

For instance: 'Comms-55 - 55 go ahead - 10-27 12345 10-35 10-16 - 10-4 10-16 Set - 10-4'

What did I say here? What did I mean?

It all numbers, but they do have meaning. You know I was talking to someone, and they were talking to me.

I used to know all the 10 codes. is not 10X10 okay. I can't remember your location and going to the bathroom though LOL 10-4 is Okay

Re: OT = Off-Topic 1 year ago #8

Platinum Boarder
each company has their own code.

For example: 10-2 for Police and First Security its literally 'going to', but for Icon Security its 10-3.
Most Security companies have only ten codes, but Icon Security uses forty, although only a handful of codes get used at a time.

These codes were developed so that if someone was eavesdropping they couldn't figure it out that Hawaii 5-0 was on the way

  • Below are the Citizens band radio codes that are pretty much universal in nature. Used in Canada, USA and most english speaking countires. This is also what the RCMP and Vancouver Police use. Most Canadian police use it as well as most radio operators, wither they are on private of public band widths. Even the Radio Phones of the 1980's and 1990's used this code as I used it with the operators when I drove hot shot truck in Lloydminster Alberta in the mid 1980's

yes, that list is very universal.

but you're missing the point I was trying to make.

also I'm not allowed to reveal what the codes are of the security company I work for... because I still work for them.

They are however, completely different and quite stupid at times.

there's one we can't use. In your CB list above it says 10-28 'identify your station' - this is interesting and shows how old this is. CB receivers in the old days could not display channels like the modern ones in the past decade can. I've had three analog CBs one of which was a Tait 2000 and that was a really good analog scanner too. It was a similar model to what the NZ Police were using. But the Police went digital a couple of years ago so the CBs/RTs became obsolete.

Anyhoo, the code we have at work we don't use is 10-28 which means for our work 'leaving reception area'.
The reason why this is useless is that you have to know well in advance when you will lose reception. We've figured out certain deadspots, especially out it the wop-wops (google it up).

Different companies use different codes. With digital it doesn't matter and also the codes shorten the length of time when we're on air. If its going to be a long story get Comms to phone you. Those are our instructions.

but anyway.
Most of those codes above are obsolete.

CB radio died a suddenn death here in the UK when Short wave was banned, not that it was ever legal, this was in the 60's.

I dont know if any of the truckers still have FM but you dont see twigs sticking out of cab roofs.

Codes were not really used at all as it was hard enogh keeping ahead of the law ,it was all illegal, possession was not illegal but using a CB radio was. the occasional "What's your 20" was used. we also had nick-names for variuos places around the town, reservation, for an upmarket area of town, big twig was a cross roads alongside of which was a tv relay tower etc, fun while it lasted

It got very expensive with HAM international super upper side bands, so it became very elitist another reason for its demise.

With the mobile phones of today who needs it??

Chris

Re: OT = Off-Topic 1 year ago #12

Platinum Boarder
range is good and its free, provided you got a wicked aerial.

and anyway... my RT set is Analog, not shortwave.

Ambulance and Fire still use Analog.

Most other companies, Police, security, buses, truckers... have all gone Digital.

There really isn't any need for these complicated codes... but it does shorten the time to get info across especially if its routine.

Wow I only know a handful of these. And at my age you'd expect me to know more.

I much prefer not to use these abbreviations they are one my niggles, Facebook and text message seem to the main ones were this is used or are people just becoming that lazy they can not be bothered to write the full words.
