Two cards on e-bay with pre-war Beetles are descried incorrectly.

This is a 1937 V30 prototype build and tested by Daimler-Benz.

Technically Volkswagen was dubbed in 1946. The 1935/6 V3 is a Porsche.

The photos appeared on a site I follow, I wonder what the thing is on the front mudguard?

I like the idea of the spare spark plugs.

They say that it is a 1937 prototype Hanomag based on a VW KdF wagen.

But there is a lot of difference of opinion.

That looks like a VW Kraft durch Freude wagen to me which has been upgraded to a military spec Kubelwagen.

It seems there is a huge debate about who designed what, all in all it was a Tatra design that was copied by F. Porsche which created the Beetle.

Tatra sued VW/Porsche but Hitler settled that when Czechoslovakia was invaded. After the war Czechoslovakia suffered under the iron curtain situation.

Finally in 1961 VW settled Tatra's claim by paying a lousy 3 million Marks. F. Porsche admitted that he had looked over the shoulder of Mr. Ledwinka, the Czech Tatra designer.

The car which is called a prototype Hanomag is considered to be a fake, built after the war in East Germany on a VW platform, using all kinds of VW Kübelwagen parts and whatever was available. The KdF Hanomag logo also considered to be fake:

If the car(s) is/are registered in a country, that has a vehicle registry open to the public, a lot of info can be gained from there.

We have such systems in Scandinavia (Denmark/Sweden/Norway) and I've found it very useful in the past for identification of obscure vehicles.

All this info is great but we still don't know what is on that fender.

As it was a military vehicle I thought it might be a night light of some sort. A lot of the military vehicles back then had hoods over their lights to prevent being spotted from above. Thanks for this answer.
