Looks like the VW Rabbit I used to own.

Yes it is a VW Golf / Rabbit. I had a 1/1 one myself, my first car, made in 1979 and it was an orange one. To celebrate the first million Golf that was produced. I wish I had kept that one.

The wheels on this one seem a bit too small for the car though

I agree Theo. They could have put a larger diameter wheel on this car.

The Renault one have Renault Toys at the bottom, so I think they were sold by dealers as well.

The 5 Turbo was part of the retro-series, just like some of these in other colours. This year some new versions are going to appear in this series. There's a Peugeot 205 in the series as well.

I have seen several at the trains and diecast fair today

The Kangoo in Renault Toys guise is not so common by the way.
