In my collection there are two different no. 623 Army Covered Wagons:

The one on the left is the later one with driver and it has the later box with the white catalogue number in a red oval on its sides.

Another difference is the tyres, which are smooth on the early models and treaded on the later ones.

But here is the real unusual difference, the tread is not the regular block shaped, but a kind of chevron-like herringbone pattern.

We know a similar kind of pattern (not exactly the same) from the early, 1947-1950 Fodens and some related late-1940s Dinky Supertoys. But I have never come across this kind of tyre in all my decades of Dinky study and collecting. The spare wheel has a smooth tyre, but the regular four hubs are fitted with this chevron type tyre. Even if they are not authentical Dinky tyres and have been changed some time (I have this model over 25 years already) I have never seen this kind of tyre on another brand of model toys, let alone a Dinky.

Could anyone help me identifying this tyre, or confirm or deny its authenticity?

Thanks and kind regards, Jan

Can't say as I have seen this tire before either, Jan. Does not look like Dinky to me?

Jan---

I also have never seen those style of tires either, and since it is not on the spare, would guess it is likely not Dinky IMO.  But very interesting nonetheless, and unusual!

Nope not me either, although they look like tractor treads to me.
