I was lucky to have the winning bid on Ebay for this early Foden, as some of you will know its quite rare because it dosent have the tow hook. I believe these were only made for a very short time 1947 - 1948. it will be staying as is and go on display with my only other Fodens.

That is a nice item in excellent condition for its age... I agree it should be left as is, casting looks perfect, its been played with.. but carefully... Straight axels and good paintwork... a great buy....

Very nice addition....any of the Foden's you can find in that nice of shape should be bought! And you are right, the ones without the tow hook and without the tanker slots on the underside are the earliest versions....somewhere around 1947-1948, and it is #503. I think you can easily find the correct early, herringbone style tires for it if you want to give it that authentic look
I think I have the exact twin to yours, as shown below, along with an early box. Notice that the box shows a picture of the Flat Truck without the tailboard, but the description says it is for the Flat Truck with Tailboard.

Your correct anytime you see one of these old girls buy them,I have 10 in my collection only 2 without hooks though.


I will get some correct herringbone tyres for it, all but the front 2 are orginal but have gone hard and brittle with age,I have another early Foden High Side wagon with no hook that needs a couple as well.

Dinkyfan, You have a fine Foden as well, the box has the correct marking indicating "w/tailboard" along with the circled number 503. although not pictured. It does not get any better than that.

I have a general question for all of you regarding these toys specifically  and I am including what I have but not limited to the Dinkys, Hubleys, Tootsie, and all the other older brands. I have said in the past, that I have had my Dinkys starting in 1953, along with many others starting around that time as well. They were toys, and played with for many years. passed on to my children and now on to my grandchildren. I also mentioned, I restore these when and if required, which is rarely. They are still in my home and almost all are kept in many display cabinets, unlocked. The grand children play with them and return them after playtime without prompting.  I also have 2 Dinkys that are are not played with. There are duplicates of these, and like the rest available for play. These 2 are factory mint, no chips, no rubs, no rust. MINT. PERFEC!!!. Obviously my sons may have said these are hands off, but were never hands of to my sons. I consider that respectful.

Well, sometimes I did, only with playworn Dinky Toys. But they liked their endless loads of shiny, fashionable, modern toys much better. That went both for the children and nowadays even more for the grandchildren. And I understand.

The pure, authentic, original quality toys are treasured museum pieces now, not for children. And that's what THEY understand.

That is a good question to raise, about letting children or grandchildren play with your toys. I guess in my mind it depends if they are collectibles...if they are then no. Our grandchildren have lots of other things to play with, including a few older, playworn Dinky's that are not special to me.
When I was as young as 6 years old I already was very careful with things...did not break or bend them and also did not bang them together. I still remember not letting my younger brother play with my Dinky's and he complained to Mom.....she said to let him....what could it hurt? Well, when he brought my Dinky Reconnaissance car back it had a badly bent rear axle....in less than one hour! So that was the end of that!
I like to see my Dinky collection, so I do keep it in a glass display case that I can and do lock. All of the grandchildren know not to open it or take anything out and they respect that.
I am proud of my large collection of mostly mint or like new Dinky's and want to keep it that way. I think setting aside a few you don't mind getting played with is fine, along with all the other toys kids have today, but I doubt most serious collectors let their kids or grandchildren play with any of the "nice stuff"
