TOPIC: Dinky vs Tekno car transporter

Dinky vs Tekno car transporter 1 year ago #1

Senior Boarder
Dinkycollect asked if I have got the Tekno Volvo car transporter but unfortunately I don't. I have been looking for a good example at the right price for a while.

I know there is a story about Tekno's cooperation with Dinky and I'll try to find it. Maybe someone knows the full story.

And this is the Tekno ramp.

I too am very interested in the story behind the ramp. I posted some queries in the new finds section yesterday ( topic name: In depth Amzing Koninginnedag 2012 finds)

This example is for sale

It looks exactly the same as the dinky version just like the trailer.

The Tekno came out in 1958, after the Dinky in '53.  In my series of articles in Model Auto Review, "Stories from the Tekno Factory, 1953-1960" (translations of Peter Frandsen's original Danish articles), Erik Spon, the man who designed the Auto Transporter, said that the English had been at the factory - Dinky and Corgi - in that time period to talk about castings.  They were very impressed with his Volvo bus window casting.  So after talking with Dinky, Tekno then probably came out with their own version of the Transporter.

The previous post over several pages shows that the 2 castings are not the same.  But the Tekno is definitely inspired by the Dinky - same separate ramp, same design of the rear gate!

what scale is the Tekno? Bigger, smaller, same size?
as compared to the Dinky trailer.

The trailer itself is 19cm on the Tekno - I really need to get a Dinky version!

The Dinky is the same length so obviously they have a lot more in common.

I think Theo and I established that the ramps are the same. Same width, length and the ends are made the same for attaching to the back of the trailer and where it meets the ground. Theo, you need to find one at one of the boot sales you go to, just for comparison purposes.

Jim

I do have the Dinky car transporter so I can see if the Tekno ramp fits.

I have been offered 50 euros for the ramp, is it worth it?

I can tell you that my supplier ( you all know who so I don't have to say) sells it for £3.30 plus shipping cost. I sell it for over double that in US dollars due to the ebay and pay pal fees. I think that  €50.00 would be a great price for an original. I also have the decals for the Carrier from the same supplier but I made up my own decal set for the Ramp and sell them on my eBay store as there are none produced that I know of.

€50  -wow, that seems like a lot, but the truck itself in mint boxed condition is easily 5x that, so maybe it isnt too unreasonable.

I have 4 of the transporter, all variants. I have one original ramp. What measurements would you like. Mine is 235mm long from tip if the ramp at the ground to the rounded end on the Trailer. The surface where the cars would drive up the ramp is about 37mm wide, The sides of that area might be 3mm high. The ramp is 51 mm wide on the underside, the sides vertical are about 5mm wide and the sloped side to the top is about 9mm wide. The curved part at the top where it would join with the carrier top deck is about 43mm wide and hangs about 7 or 8mm down from the top of the ramp. It has two half circles cut out on either side of the part that hangs down and connects to where the lower ramp would sit in the upright or closed position. Long taper at the end that touches the ground, about  35mm long and starts up in the upper angled portion of the sloped side of the deck.  The part of the ramp that actually touches the ground is only 33 or 34mm wide. The tin is about .024inches thick. Sorry don't have metric guage.

Hi all,
I found a Tekno Auto-transporter in Denmark in good condition at 85 Euro incl. ramp. I think that is a nice price. Now we can compare the two.

At first sight both the trailer and the ramp look exactly the same but it turns out that the trailer castings are completely different. The Dinky trailer is furthermore 5 mm longer than the Tekno. Both are made up by two pieces: The Dinky has an 'inside' casting and an 'outside' casting. The Tekno has a separate top casting (the light grey part).

The ramps have the same measurements but have a slight diffrent construction. You can see that the sheet metal is folded inside on the Tekno version:

The 'flaps' don't have exactly the same design but very little differ:

Since we havn't seen a picture of any real Pullmore I would say that Tekno was inspired by the Dinky version, but they developed their own construction.
