Got this on Sunday toy fair well to be truthful Lorraine bought it for me mismatch of tyres, not a problem I have spare ones,


She paid £10 for it roughly what they are going for els-where, however no post charges and we got to look at it before buying

Nice find. I have one of these here that I have to restore. It was badly overpainted in  a dark green with light brown or tan. I even have a nice repo box to go with it.

Very good find, have to ask my wife too to go to swapmeets next time.

There are some nice cars in the background of your photo too, some Matchbox Regular  wheels I think?

Not the easiest one to restore as I know - the problem is yellow paint on the high points and the corners! The rest is straightforward.

Hugh it is not that hard to restore. I have done a few. Here is one I did for a friend on Vancouver Island about 2 years ago now. I find the less thinner the better with this color paint.

Hi Hugh i hope you don't mind me answering for Jim, I am not sure what pin you are asking about, however I have rather battered one of these trucks still in pieces for a resto, there is a 1.7 mm .067 inch pin to the rear of the cab base the artic trailer is hooked on to this, both mime have crimped ends I just filed off the crimps a litttle at a time until i could drift out the pin and the trailer and cab section come apart.


The artic part is a different thing I very gently drilled the edge of the pin until I was able to prise the plate off, I did not really want to lose the shaft completely as there is also a washer assisting the trailer to swivel, however I presume that this could be replaced with a rivet or a philips screw as it is hidden behind the cab base plate and can not be seen, once the unit is re assembled.


No doubt Jim has a much easier way of doing things I just make it up as i go along.

The series of pictures below show how I handle a connection like this. I do not want to remove the pin as it is factory stock and in good condition.









Mask off the trailer after giving it a good couple or three coats of paint. Let it dry for a day or two before masking to help prevent pulling the paint off.





This is what is should look like after you paint the black on the turntable.


It is a bit of a pain to paint this way but the results are well worth it.





If I was to remove the pin I would do the same as ixtis 1965 and only take off enough to clear the hole for removal. The right sized punch or drift will put the edges back into place to hold it all together.


The pin is part of the box. If you do take it too far you can drill out a hole where the pin is if you cut the pin off. Drill a hole and fit a flat taper head screw with nut, flat washer and lock washer. It will be hidden inside the body under the base plate. You will only see the head of the screw just like on the Foden wagons when you replace the spare tire washer set up with a replacement like I sell.










You can probably get something similar at your local hardware store.

I removed the artic plate because the truck had been stood on and badly bent so i removed it to straighten it but if that is not an issue the way Jim did it is probably easier

I try hard not to take apart attachements like this or the Pullmore trailer or the Mighty Antar trailer etc. It does make it a bit harder to mask and paint but retains the original connection, which is important to me. If it is broken and you have to take it apart it would depend on how badly it is broken and what you have to remove. There are various methods to repair this including using pop rivets (not my favorite choice), screws or even leaving some of the post and drilling it for a screw. Here is how I masked and painted the cab. First is the Orange/Yellow paint and of course you paint dark over light.






Masked the cab from the fender by using a circle template I have left from my Draftsman days. It take a bit of concentration to cut it right. That wheel arch is amost a perfect circle.






3/4" seems to be the magic number.
I use a sheet of Saftey Glass from a store display for a work bench top. Cleans up with thinners or paint stripper really nice. Does not get cut up when using an exacto knife and it paint and thinners resistant. Just don't drop it or drop a heavy weight on it. I have used this for over 7 years now.
