Some petrol items now:

The National Benzole logo at the rear of the same Studebeker Petrol Tanker, Dinky Toys no. 443

A trio of petrol pumps in the Louwman Motor Museum in The Hague (NL). A National Benzole pump in the middle.

The Mercury logo of the pump in some more detail.

The Dinky Toys no. 49d Shell Petrol Pump (1935-1954/55), post-war issue.

A similar real one on the left, also Louwman Motor Museum.

I see they are reproducing those old Fuel Pumps so car enthusiasts can have one on display in their workshops and the such.

I made these photos a fortnight ago, and I am convinced that they are no reproductions but extremely well restored originals. Generally speaking I do not like such extreme restorations, but I could not help admiring them for their high quality and restorer's craftsmanship. The same goes for the whole museum collection. Very fine originals, mostly very good original finish, many 'new', or nearly new, or better restorations than usually seen. Regards, Jan

The National Benzole logo is really nice, Jan. I like the Studebaker tankers and searched the Internet for a picture. I found this piece of the tanker:

The front is much easier to find:

I also foud these Vauxhalls to compare with Jan's photo. Seems that Dinky missed to paint the roof:

Jan I wasn't referring to those old pumps that you have placed in your thread. I was referring to those reproductions that are on the market these days that are made in China. This could also include signs from all types of advertising and the likes that are printed in the USA.

I have a couple of mates who sell those signs. Another was selling those reproduction petrol pumps and was also involved the the renovation old as well.

The Dinky Toys no. 30a Chrysler Airflow Saloon:

This is the real one introduced, but look at the back, which is much less sloping compared with the Dinky model!

This one, though not the same, looks more like the Dinky with the smoothly sloping back.

Perhaps others can explain. Or was it technically easier to produce a more flowing back?

And a grille comparison:

Comments welcome! Regards, Jan

janwerner, I believe Dinky put the basic idea across. The real 4 door is sloped but not as much as the 2 door. Dinky engineers probably wanted to accent this. Your comment regarding the amount of slope Dinky produced compared better to the 2 door is demonstrative of that fact. Look at the Airflow rear wheel covers enclosing the wheels. Your picture of the real 4 door is plain, although real Airflows as well as in your 2 door and the pictures illustrated shows a "half of a flying wing" on the cover. The Dinky Airflow has the same "flying wing". Some Airflows also had a spare tire mounted on the sloping rear. I believe there is a slight hump on you picture. This could very well be the spare tire. Dinky has no spare. The 1936 Airflow did not have the slope, it had a raised trunk.   Does this help? dinkyboy

janwerner, additionally along the same thought line, refer to the Dinky Frazer - Nash. Except for the 2 separate windscreens utilized for racing events, the real Frazer - Nash had a split and angled windscreen. Dinky engineers probably thinking economics figured using the same windscreen for probably their version of the Alvis or the like, made their screen flat. The Dinky Ford Fordor lacks a windshield center-post. The similar body design of the real Ford 1949 thru 1952 had a center-post. Don't loose sleep with all these slight differences, the Dinky engineers put the basic idea across, and it has been great. Great detail, and a lasting toy. What more can we ask? Dinky, part of my life since 1953 ... and still enjoying it. dinkyboy

My first and second Dinky were Made In France and they were the SRN6 Hovercraft and the Peugeot J7.

It was bought on either our first trip from Calais to Dover or the second trip around 1975.

Anyhoo, Dad took us on a family trip to England. He had earlier been on a business trip in one and so it was that he wanted to show off the marvels of technology. Off we went on our trip in the home-made Peugeot J7 campervan.

Hi Dinkyboy, yours is the expert, clarifying comment I really appreciate! And I share your thoughts. Indeed, Meccano made some more of such 'hybrid' solutions. Regards, Jan

Heya Dinkyboy, been on the car carrying SRN4 three times when I was 7 or 8yo.

Recently got an Airfix model of the Hover-Lloyds SRN4.

Didn't have the pleasure of riding in the smaller SRN6, but have collected a few of those.

Best one in my collection will go to Corgi
