Replace the spring plate on your suspension

Do you want to know how to get paint off plastic or replace the bent axles on an old Dinky car? Or maybe you've come up with a great new method of remaking windscreens or removing decals. Whether you're looking to share your own info or ask how to do something, if it's diecast-related, here's where to do it!

Replacing the plate that holds the axles and allows them to move up and down freely is not that difficult. Most if not all times this is necessary is due to rust. Some bent ones can be fixed by inserting a rod under the tin behind the axle slots and then pressing the spring tin down some. I use needle nose pliers and try to keep it straight where the axle sits. Tough to do.

If your plate is rusted off like mine was then all you need to do is uncrimp the end with needle nose pliers. Bend the flange up and straight from the inside. Anyway you remove it is fine, even drilling.

I could not save mine as it flew across my shop and disappeared into never never land. I have a kit left over from leather work that is an eyelet applicator. Here is a picture.

You see two tools here. The upper one is a hole punch for leather to make a hole for the eyelet to go through. The other tool is the set tool that turns the other end over. There should be an anvil the shape of the curled end but I have no idea where that is. This is a hobby shop or Leather Shop or Crafting Store Item and usually comes in a kit of various sizes. Refills of single sized items like 50 or 100 to a bag.

This is the Base after I had finished installing the new spring.

Flip side

Next time I am in town, maybe next week, I will see if I can find some smaller ones for future projects. This is great for replacing sagged and broken spring plates.

Compared to the original below, mine is quite a bit larger. You won't notice as much once it is painted.

Thanks Corky. When I found the grommets/eyelets in the back of a draw in the kitchen I knew exactly what I wanted to do with them. Had been toyin with making the old rivet work again but it was hard to work with. Then it took a flying leap across the workshop so how knows where it is now. I will hear it go up the vacuum one of these days.
